Early December, 2017
The homeowner of a house on Third Street in East Athens was unable to insure his property, due to lack of a railing around a small side entry porch. So HOA did the needed work so he can now get coverage. We will return to this location in early 2018 to do some soffit repairs and exterior trim painting.
A small HOA team undertook major interior improvements at 1763 West Hancock Avenue, in a room with a collapsing ceiling, deteriorating wallboard, and worn out carpet. The project involved removing damaged materials, installing a new sheet rock ceiling and replacement trim, and complete finish painting. Also, carpet donated by UGA’s Office of Sustainability was put down. The end result? A dangerous living space had been transformed!
August 26, 2017
HOA participated in UGA's "Dawg Day of Service" on a Saturday early in the fall semester, and a small group of hard-working UGA students painted the newly-built (by HOA) front porch at 275 Colima Avenue and applied a protective sealant to the porch floor.
March 25-26, 2016
A super-skilled HOA volunteer team representing Oneta Woodworks, Saint Udio, Sons of Sawdust and the UGA Material Reuse program made great progress this weekend at 132 South Billups Street. The volunteers removed all of the old, deteriorating vinyl siding and replaced roughly half of the original weatherboard siding with reclaimed wood donate by Oneta Woodworks. A little trim work and some caulking remains to be completed before the house is primed and painted.
December 5th, 2015
It was a dual effort on December 5, as a dozen students and two advisors from North Oconee High School Beta Club competed finish painting at 275 Colima Avenue while Hank Hambright and Lindsay Pennington demolished the rotted front porch deck and rebuilt it. The Beta Club made a $500 donation to HOA and will be a program sponsor for 2016! Work at 275 will continue this winter, when a new porch roof is constructed by another volunteer team.
November 15th, 2015
On November 15 half a dozen members of the Athens Road Runners club spent the afternoon scraping old paint and applying a coat of primer at 275 Colima Avenue. ARR also donated $500 to Hands On Athens and will thus be an HOA sponsor for 2016!
November 13th, 2015
Frequent Hands On Athens partner Athens Academy once again teamed up with the program on November 13, the school’s annual Upper School Service Day. More than a dozen students and two instructors worked most of the day prepping and painting the exterior of a house at 130 Rose Street. Athens Academy also made a donation of nearly $300 to cover all materials and supplies utilized during their efforts!
November 7th & 8th, 2015
HOA volunteers James Anderson, Dennis Mason and Chris Shannon teamed up to undertake a major rear porch reconstruction project at 750 Field Avenue the weekend of November 7 & 8. Despite wet conditions the trio kept at it and completed the job, and eventually the new porch will be painted by another group of HOA volunteers.
October 3rd, 2015
In early October, DSI Group partnered with Hands On Athens to completely rebuild the front porch floor at 173 Lyndon Avenue, a ca.1900 dwelling in the Boulevard Historic District. DSI generously donated all necessary labor for this technical project, which involved demolishing the rotted floor and structural members, installing a new structural system, and laying the tongue-and-groove flooring. The floor had been in such poor condition that it could not be safely used, but now it is once again a pleasant place to relax on a nice autumn afternoon in Athens. (An HOA volunteer team will paint the porch floor later in the fall.)
July 25th, 2015
On July 25th, Hands On Athens volunteers completed a variety of repairs, painting and landscaping improvements for a low-income homeowner 348 North Church Street within the Reese Street Historic District. The volunteers consisted of a dozen members of Athens Jaycees. Work accomplished included rebuilding and painting the rotted bases of two front porch columns; reattaching and painting front porch ceiling boards; replacing two rotted runs of siding and lower window trim above the front porch and painting the new material; replacing three rotted runs of siding on the back of the house and painting the new material; cutting a tremendous amount of brush in the front, back and side yards and shaping other landscape elements.
June 3rd - 4th, 2015
Hands On Athens is continuing improvements this month at 1060 W. Hancock Avenue. A desperately-needed new metal roof was installed June 3-5. Stucco work on the two main chimneys and front porch fascia repair will soon follow. Project partners for this latest work include Athens Roofing, Inc. and Georgia Metals, Inc. Also, HOA veteran Tosh Lickliter will take on the chimney repair and lead a small volunteer team in completing work on the front porch.
April 11th -12th, 2015
On April 11th and 12th, Hands On Athens volunteers painted and completed a variety of repairs and landscaping improvements at 151 Magnolia Terrace and 140 South Billups Street. The work was directed by Ellen Stinchcomb of local contracting company Rainbow Painting, and the volunteers consisted of a dozen student members of UGA's National Residence Hall Honorary chapter. Both Rainbow Painting and UGA NRHH are regular HOA project partners and we greatly appreciate their continued participation and support!
March 28th, 2015
Hands On Athens volunteers accomplished a lot of good work at two locations the weekend of March 28-29. A group of Athens Academy students, under the direction of long-time HOA volunteer and supporter Patrick Snead, scraped and painted 348 N. Church Street, an important dwelling in the Reese Street Historic District. And at 1060 W. Hancock Avenue, landscape improvements were completed through the combined efforts of North Oconee High School Beta Club led by Paige Cole, UGA students led by Jared Bybee, Koons Environmental Design, and G & G Landscape Design. We also thank Papa John's Pizza and Subway for providing lunch for volunteers. HOA will complete further work at both of these houses in the coming weeks!
February 14, 2015
On Valentine's Day HOA teamed up with two dozen volunteers from Barnett Shoals Elementary School G.R.O.W. (Generating Respect and Responsibility for Our World). After a chilly start to the morning, everyone was warmed up and the work went well. Student and parent volunteers continued with front porch and landscape improvements at a house on South Billups Street and made great progress. The porch is now close to finished and the back yard has had a complete transformation and looks great! We appreciated the donation of a load of mulch courtesy of New Urban Forestry.
